Set A Goal

Setting your goal should be your very first step in any job search. If you know what you are looking for, it will be easier for you to find it. Most important, it will let you get the maximum benefit from the resources that are available to help you. Friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and others will be able to help you more easily if they have a clear understanding of what you hope to achieve. Consider two requests for favors:

  1. "Could you help me find a job in marketing?"
  2. "Could you help me? I'm trying to find a job in the food industry where I would have a lot of involvement with new product development. I would like to stay in Chicago."

How would you help each of these people? Which would be easier to help? The value of having a clear goal is obvious from this example.

Your goal should describe the kind of job you are seeking. Questions to think about when setting your goal:

  • Why am I looking for a job? Looking for more responsibility? A desire to relocate? A career change? Looking for a different kind of company to work for?
  • Do I want to work in a particular industry? Which one(s)?
  • What kind of company do I want to work for? Large, small, medium? Technology driven? Consumer goods?
